gmail notifications sometimes fail to get added to the messaging menu

Over the past few days, I've been getting frequent sound notifications from gmail without corresponding notifications in the messaging menu. I have been seeing some notifications in the messaging menu, even from gmail. But I've been hearing frequent (ever few minutes) sound notifications, without anything being added to the messaging menu. I've tracked it down to gmail, see long entry below:

When this notification was logged, I did hear the blip however there was no entry added to the messaging menu.
