no sound from mbrola voice

running ubuntu 12.04 and latest version of wakeup(1.4) and decided to try mbrola voices and cannot get any sound from them . Also, sound settings says no application is using sound while testing wakeup application while it will notice the alsa plug-in for the other voices when they run. I have been very pleased with the results of the efforts produced by Mister Glass, and am certain I shal l remain so until the bovines return to their abode.
