Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

There appears to be some random screen corruption in GNOME Terminal, as of 2.17.92 (VTE 0.15.4). The latest versions of each seem to have made little difference to the issue (missing characters, cursor block appearing over typed input). This has also been witnessed with XFCE4's terminal.

Probably not a gnome-terminal bug then.

Thanks for your bug report. Do you have a standard way of reproducing the problem. Which video driver do you use. Do you use accessibility features? Do you use compiz/beryl?

The problem always occurs with GNOME Terminal. Not using any accessibility features, no Compiz/Beryl/XGL/AIGLX. Opensource ATI drivers.

I can confirm somewhat similiar behaviour with my gnome terminal. It tends to corrupt when I change from another virtual desktop to another.

I'm also seeing this a lot. I use the ATI driver and run full screen gnome-terminal sessions, all running screen. I switch between virtual desktops a lot and it only happens when I switch and will go away on a redraw (i.e. pressing ctrl-l in the terminal).

I'm attaching a screenshot that shows an example of the corruption I get. The actual window is a dselect session, so it's the whole lower half of the screen which is corrupt. The toolbar appears to be from my galeon session running on desktop 4, and the parts of the email you can see are from a (remote) gnus session running on a terminal on desktop 2.

Sorry, just to clarify, I mean the open source ATI driver, not fglrx.

Yes, with 0.16.0svn20070403-0ubuntu1 at least, I got the same kind of
bitmap corruption just yesterday.

Do you have a way to trigger the corruption? That would make easier to
work on the bug. Could you also try with 0.16.1?

I am also using the DRI drivers for my Radeon 9200. Is this a driver-related issue, somehow?

So, I'm afraid I can't reliably trigger the 'random pixmaps from other
windows being merged into the terminal', but I can reliably reproduce
corruption by running 'man ld', hitting '>' to skip to the end and
then holding down 'w' until I reach the top of the manpage. When I
hit the top, the manpage is inevitably garbled by terminal corruption.

Still getting the corruption with 0.16.1.

I just rebuilt vte 0.16.4-0ubuntu2 on Feisty and -- so far -- am happy with that version. No corruption so far and performance / resource consumption also seems to be within limits.

I have similar issues with xfce4-terminal, but disabling compositing in xorg fixes it, so it could be at least partially xorg/fglrx's fault.

Could somebody having the issue send this upstream directly at bugzilla.gnome.org where the software authors can read about it? Thanks in advance.

I am experiencing this exact problem on an nVidia Quadro 160M, latest binary nvidia driver, latest version of vte and both xfce terminal and gnome-terminal (in Gentoo).

Did this get reported to gnome.org, already, and if so, can somebody link to it? Do we know what application this should be filed under? (xorg? vte? nvidia?)
