3dd deletes three lines + an extra character

Bug Description
dd works fine. It deletes one line
but 2dd deletes 2 lines + 1 character extra; 3dd deletes three lines and one char extra, etc.
perhaps related:
2yy followed p or P inserts an extra <CR>

dd, 2dd and 3dd all work as expected for me.
I don't know what version I have, but I got it on about April 18, 2009, and don't think I've updated.
