Null bytes in syslog after system crash (Ubuntu 16.10)

Bug Description

My system crashes when I leave it inactive for over an hour. I think Variety might be the cause.

Ubuntu 16.10
Unity 7.5.0
Variety 0.6.2

Attached is the relevant output from: /var/logs/syslog

Summary of log:
23:07:00 Computer crashes, it seems Variety may have been in the middle of a command.
during crash computer outputs 00\00\00\00\00..... into log
  23:20:01 Computer is restarted

Any help in diagnosing this would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben

The cause for the crash may be end of memory due to memory eating bug in Google Chrome. It's still unknown why syslog ends up with null bytes and why kernel OOM killer could not fix the issue.

Usually complete system crashes are caused by some fault in drivers, the kernel, hardware, etc. It is very unlikely that Variety, a desktop program working with high level desktop components is the direct cause of issues like this.

Without any further leads, I'm marking this issue as invalid.
