Bug Description

All changes in Preferences are reset after clicking "Close". I tried unticking VRTY.ORG in Sync and Social tab--I don't think this matters, as all changes in Preferences are forgotten.

0.6.4

MATE 1.12.1

16.04.2 (Xenial Xerus) 64-bit Ubuntu Mate

Could not run the Log; entering the text sudo /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety -v
resulted in sudo: /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety: command not found

The resetting of all changes always happens after exiting the Preferences screen. I have no trouble auto-starting Variety. The error happens after clicking the "Close" button on the Preferences window.

You are not supposed to run variety with sudo, and most other graphical applications too - this is generally dangerous, don't do it. "sudo" means "run as superuser".

It is very probable that because of running Variety with sudo, the permissions to its config file are now broken and it cannot write to it when you run it normally.
My suggestion is to delete the folder ~/.config/variety (you may have to run this with "sudo" if you have run Variety with sudo before: "sudo rm -r ~/.config/variety"), and then start Variety normally, WITHOUT using sudo anymore.

Otherwise, Variety is no longer installed under /opt, just run it normally and look for the log in /home/<your_username>/.config/variety/variety.log. But I suggest you first try the above suggestion of resetting the config folder.

I'm not aware of running Variety with sudo--Variety starts with the system, or I go to the Application list; I'm not sure what you mean. The sudo command was used because

anthony@anthony-Aspire-X1200:~$ /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety -v resulted in

bash: /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety: No such file or directory

For the .config/variety/variety.conf file, I pasted a saved copy from usb to what the original contained because I had to reinstall, and the backed-up version made the clock appear as I want.

Is starting Variety through the application list the normal way to start the program? Do the earlier recommends still apply?

Variety should now be installed to /usr/bin/variety, not in /opt. Because
/usr/bin/ is in your PATH, you should be able to just run "variety" without
any leading path.
