Bug Description
I often like to pause on backgrounds but I always forget to unpause it and go days without realizing. It'd be very nice to instead have a "extend by x time" feature instead so I can enjoy it for a bit longer without worrying about having to unpause.

This sounds like a too specific feature, it will just introduce UI complexity without being helpful for many people. Sorry.
You can use Variety's commandline options (run "variety --help" to see them) to emulate this behavior in a script and then set a keyboard shortcut for this.
