Bug Description

There is a process which is running under variety (0.4.20) called convert.

Every minute or so it cosumes 100% cpu that freezes gnome 3.14. Even in core i7-4770 machine. These freezing is not noticed in other windows managers, such as Unity ot Mate.

Is there a way to limite the cpu usage of this convert processes. May be limiting it to one core.

Convert is ImageMagick's process, used by Variety to draw the clock and apply effects. Do you use the clock or any of the effects from the Effects tab?

Normally drawing the clock is not CPU intensive, some of the effects might be, depending on your setup. Or you might be hitting some edge case that performs badly. Can you please attach here or email me your ~/.config/variety/variety.conf file? Also what is your screen resolution and the have you set Variety to use some very high-resolution images?

I have 4 monitors. (on nvidia gtx 970)
resolutions are 1080p, 2 qhd and one 4k.

Why under unity I did not have these issues.

Any suggestion on what I can do to reduce the the cpu load.

I have an unrelated issue: Since switching to gnome 3 (3.14) I am not able
to interact with the variety notification icon (applet). I cannot access
the settings gui.

Thanks

What is the resolution of the generated wallpaper images in ~/.config/variety/wallpaper?
Do the spikes stop if you turn off clock?

Re: Gnome 3.14: Do you have app-indicator support extension installed? To bring the GUI run "/opt/extras.ubuntu.com/variety/bin/variety --preferences" in a Terminal.

The resolution that I found is 2560x1706 of one file another file had a
resolution of 3624x2502. It does not fit any of my monitor resolutions
(1920x1080, 2560x1440, 3840x2160)

Yes turning off the clock does solve the problem.

Same Problem here.
If the mouse is on the pictures, everything is fine.
If i put the mouse outside of the pictures, my CPU is on rampage and eats little children.
