Screen is black when disks are being checked

Bug Description
I'm running freshly updated Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. If there is a disk check during the boot, screen only blinks once the message that disks are being cheked and then the screen is black. The check continues though and Ubuntu boots in a while and if I press 'C' it stops checking and boots immediately, but screen shows no progress. It is absolutely black, even the backlight is off
