Two power managers started

Not sure if this is an issue with the Xfce power manager or desktop in general...

I've been using XUbuntu for several years on a Thinkpad laptop. Using the XFCE power manager I have configured the laptop to suspend when the laptop lid is closed. However, when I upgraded to XUbuntu 10.10, XFCE started also gnome-power-manager automatically. This has the effect that quite often when I open the lid, the laptop resumes and immediately goes back to sleep. Only the second resume succeeds.

I had to manually remove gnome-power-manager from the startup session, and now things work mostly fine. However, occasionally (after using the laptop for some time) gnome-power-manager is mysteriously started and the same problem occurs. I have to kill gnome-power-manager to get rid of it.

There should be some check that the two power managers don't run at the same time since they are obviously incompatible.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as confirmed and let them handle it from here.

There should be a conflicts included in the package installer to insure only one power-manager is installed.

Hi,

I found at least one action that starts the gnome power manager (even after I've disabled it from the startup session). When I open the update manager and click either "Check" or "Install Updates", the gnome power manager is automatically started (even before providing a password). My guess would be that it's the authentication agent that does it (polkit-gnome), since it's at the point of authentication that it gets started.

This might be related to the update manager warning to plug in the a/c power before performing an upgrade. (I don't know if something there is hard-coded to use specifically the gnome power manager.)

I don't have time to try and tackle this, sadly, but I did notice something potentially useful:

Part of your problem could actually be a bug in update-manager.
update-manager tries to use the org.gnome.PowerManager interface to inhibit sleep before it tries the freedesktop standard (org.freedesktop.PowerManagement) that xfce-power-manager uses. This could start gnome-power-manager unnecessarily.

That may not fix your problem completely, but it's a start.

As posted earlier, you should be able to just get rid of gnome-power-manager to fix this problem.
