strange graphic behaviour and global menu won't reset

I initially downloaded Unsettings to put the menus back to where I like them on the application windows. This seemed to work except for on Firefox which still seemed to have a global menu. Then I opened up Synaptic and tried installing an application, the gtk libraries and pressed apply and the dialog that pops up turned all blue. So, I set the global menu to ON again and that seemed to cure the blue problem, but the the applications still have their menus and the global menu did not reset.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Unity 3D. I will remove it and the ppa and see what happens.
