Bug Description

Apps lens is always empty on the emulator.

Image ubuntu=20140415.1,device=20140411.3,version=297

Just create an image with 'ubuntu-emulator create' and run it, once unity8 is finally up, the app lens will be empty.

Was also able to reproduce this issue once with manta, but worked after another reflash.

The two are different, on manta you can see that the scopes are loaded, but no results are shown, which suggests that the click scope itself stopped working.
On the emulator, there's not even a header, which means that no scopes have been discovered. Adding unity-scopes-shell task, then.

Scope registry says it took too long to start the scopes.

$ restart scope-registry
$ restart unity8

Results in scopes working again.

So problems are twofold, I'd say:
a) scope-registry does not wait long enough aka emulator is too slow
b) unity-scopes-shell does not refresh when scope-registry restarts

We need a way to signal a client that something happened in the registry (refresh / restart etc).

this is getting ridiculous, how do you canonical people expect people to write apps for this platform if you can't even provide a basic working emulator?

I can still reproduce this on any emulator instance. As a workaround, doing a search on the Apps scope and then cancelling the search, will populate it with apps as expected.

As a workaround until this bug is fixed, you can click on search, and search for anything, and all the apps will appear.

See the linked branch. It changes the default timeout for registry invocations to 5000 ms.

Please let me know how this works for you.

What emulator architecture do you get the failure with? I just tried with i386, and the App scope is working fine. That's at version 119.

The armhf emulator is so slow on my machine that it is effectively unusable, so I couldn't test with that.

I'm going to assume this is all fine now and mark the unity8 bug as invalid, please reopen or comment if not.
