Intensive GPU usage and heating while browsing the Dash

Bug Description

When I open the Unity Dash (Ubuntu 12.04), the temperature of my GPU starts rising slowly. (It didn't happen in 11.10.) When I start browsing the dash (moving the mouse over icons and other elements), the temperature keeps getting higher and obviously it makes the noise of the cooling fan much louder.

Laptop: Dell Latitude E6510
GPU: nVidia NVS 3100M
Driver: nvidia-current-updates 295.40 0ubuntu1 amd64
Unity: 5.10.0 0ubuntu6 amd64

I'm quite sure that this regression is due to bug #980924.

Maybe it is. In my case, the dash is not sluggish (as the commenters noted for bug #980924).
