Bug Description

A new behaviour of Unity 5.8 is to animatedly move the icon of an application being installed in the Software Center to the dash. This is quite a good idea but it falls apart when clicking on said icon doesn't actually do anything during installation. While installing, it should go to the installation progress page of the Software Center. When the installation is complete, it should launch the application instead.

This isn't a duplicate. It, to the contrary, depends on the installation animation in Bug 676453. I have removed the duplicate status.

It's not related to bug #676453. Instead, it's about the animation to be added in bug #955147, which is to be added in Unity 5.10. An initial version of the change landed in Unity 5.8 that has everything except the animation.

I've subscribed MPT to the bug since he wrote the design spec on this change: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#Learning_how_to_launch_an_application

And, since this is a design bug, it would be marked Incomplete until design feedback is received.

it should not auto launch apps, it should follow same behavior from drag and drop. bug: 732526

if the installation takes several minutes i dont want it to interrupt (or even mess up) the task am currently doing.

As described in bug 676453, the Launcher icon is supposed to fill up as the installation completes. This would make clear that the app is not launchable yet.

Even if it didn't, launching Ubuntu Software Center to its screen for the app would not be useful in this case. There's nothing useful to do there in this situation.
