Allow launcher icons smaller than 32px

Call me impatient, but I like the idea of one-click access to my programs. I resized a screenshot of the Unity sidebar to emulate 24px icons and found that they were all still easily and instantly recognisable.

The accessibility of my applications and my productivity would be improved if there were a 24px icon option, as I would not need to scroll through the sidebar.

Since this will be a user-configurable part, with the setting in gnome-control-center, I doubt if it needs design discussion,

All that would need to be done would be to bring down the lower threshold of the current slider.

Note I have Bug #992485 as a duplicate to this one, although the aforementioned bug does not specifically request a size. (I'll argue that it may even be practical to move the size all the way down to 16x16, the smallest size of most icons.)

The main reason it seems from bug 713087 comment 14 is "because below 32 px, progress bar and counter appear wrong!"
I feel there must be something that can be done to make this work even if the progress bar has to hang over the launcher in the rare cases that it is visible.

I think we should just remove the restriction on minimum size. Then if badges appear wrong, treat that as a new bug.

@Daniel, that is awesome news. If there is anything I can do to help let me know. I think if it is a concern that things may break then don't allow it in the standard settings frontend at first - only make it available through manual setting or ubuntu tweak.

You have to use CCSM in order to set the icon size smaller than 32px.

It works great in 13.04 (Raring). I was now able to set it down to 8px in CCSM.

thank you for the useful information. Just one additional question. Should i create a bug against the system-setting window i posted? because there i can not use the smaller size or will that be fixed automaticly with a patch in the future?

Michael,

You can create a new bug about System Settings->Appearance not setting the icon size below 32px. That would have to be approved by Design though and may not get approved.
