Bug Description

Exactly every 30 seconds, HUD appears, even if I'm not doing anything at all. It is insanely annoying, so this should be marked as critical. The time I've spent writing this it's appeared twice. I'll have to downgrade for now, because this makes my desktop almost unusable.

I asked him to give more info (apparently, he's using Totem). Did you notice any particular use-case Jo-Erland, like a fullscreen app?

Didier: I was actually using Totem at the time, but not exclusively and it continued afterwards. When chatting on IRC, for instance, it would suddenly appear and steal focus. Extremely annoying.

I can confirm this too. This behavior starts after I used the HUD the first time in a session.

This affects me too. on 12.04 fully updated. I was just watching a video using Totem, Hud would appear every few minutes for no obvious reason and steal the focus, again and again.

No problem here with the above mentioned problem. Even no problem watching fullscreen totem videos – though they are flickering a bit.

I see this behaviour too. I make it twenty seconds before the HUD pops up, whenever Totem is playing a video. The specific video on which I noticed it was: http://people.canonical.com/~ories/HUD.m4v (in case this actually has something to do with the specific video that is playing, which seems unlikely but you never know).

It's not limited to full screen for me (in fact I did not even try full screen).

It only happens when video is actually playing. When no video has been started, or it is paused, the HUD does not pop up. It does not matter whether Totem is in the foreground or in the background.

HUD appears 30 seconds or so - when playing a movie using totem, the file is on a home share server and accessed within the home network. Switched to VLC and HUD does not appear.

So far, it looks to me like Ubuntu has decided that this should be fixed
upstream in Totem, and Gnome has decided that since this is(Apparently)
fixed in Totem 3.2.X, which Ubuntu won't ship with, downstream distros
which use older versions of Totem(Like Ubuntu) should patch it themselves.

According to the upstream code, it appears this bug is only fixed in totem 3.5 onward.

I am seeing this bug when playing mp3 embedded in Firefox. I was reminiscing to some Amiga tracks from Oakvalleys collection and the Hud kept popping up when tracks are playing (thought I was leaning on the keyboard for a while).

Not Fullscreen mode but maximised and with a half dozen other tabs open.

I am assuming Firefox uses Totem for audio/video playback...

Fix Released, indirectly via bug 923644 (which is the same root cause as this one)

This bug was fixed in the package totem - 3.0.1-0ubuntu17

---------------
totem (3.0.1-0ubuntu17) precise; urgency=low

  * debian/control.in:
    - don't Build-Depends on libxtst-dev so the codepath generating fake key
      events is disabled, those events lead to weird behaviours with
      some applications or the unity hud (lp: #923644)
    - drop the Build-Depends on individual girs, the libs depends on those
  * debian/patches/git_commandfix_incorrect_free.patch:
    - fix segfault with on line options use (lp: #860079, #884811, #917241)

  * Drop coherence plugin description since the plugin has been
    removed by GNOME. (LP: #827382)
