Bug Description

In 11.04, you could bring up the dash and type something, then tab through results. Now tab switches lenses. This is a usability issue. A user would expect tab to skip through results in a list, not switch lenses. I'd recommend another key combo to switch between lenses (such as ctrl+space, alt+space, etc).

Ctrl-tab has historically been used for switching between tabs in a single window, which is what this model is.

This needs to go back John et al, but my hunch of what should happen when the Dash is open is:

  1. Tab/Shift-Tab should advance around widgets/items within the current scope ("tab"). As it does in all traditional toolkits.
  2. Ctrl-Tab/Ctrl-Shift-Tab should advance around the scopes in the panel. As it does in other tabbed/MDI interfaces.

Agreed, tab/shift-tab should move forward/backward through files or apps within a lens. And ctrl-tab/ctrl-shift-tab should move between lenses. Right now, tab == ctrl-tab which doesn't make sense.

There should also be a way to reach the "filter results" option and it's corresponding menu with the keyboard. I'm not sure if this should be included as part of the tabbing cycle or maybe just a separate hotkey.

I will claim that this is a regression, since 1) it is a change in
behavior and 2) the previous behavior is widespread in other interfaces.

The Firefox address bar behavior has made tab completion the expected
behavior even for people not otherwise exposed to tab completion (e.g.,
in shells).
