I think perhaps some comments went a little off track.

Lets be clear that we are essentially talking about two different use cases:
1) Generally finding an open application
2) Trying to change window focus, having grouped multiple windows on your workspace, when you are already on the workspace you want.

Right now with the new switcher the applications are abstracted as icons. This is good for the first case, a "high-level" overview of all applications, as you say.

But for the second case it is clearly deficient. The Compiz Application Switcher actually highlights each window itself as you tab through them.
So you're on a workspace with multiple windows. You look at the window you want to type in - now you need to change the window focus so that you can type in it. You want to tab through the visible windows, and you want the window itself to be highlighted, not an abstracted icon.

I'm not suggesting a change to the design here, since this wouldn't involve any change to the new switcher.
