Bug Description

the unity dock isn't hiding anymore when a window is maximized/border close to it.
happened suddenly; didn't do anything special.

If the same thing ever happens again, could you check if clicking the maximized window fixes the issue? This seems to be a focusing issue.

no it didn't, it was like that for over 5 minutes; also if a smaller window gets against the dock it should hide; but it didn't eather.

it suddenly worked again; I think it was after closing the window that stood "under" the dock for a while (it didn't help to put that window away from the dock)

I am running 11.10. Just installed today. Am having the same problem. The menu dock does not move at all,and hides the left side of any window that is opened. I am using unity 2d on 32 bit.

for Unity-2d report a new bug using the command 'ubuntu-bug unity-2d'

Could you please check the next time this happens if closing LibreOffice solves the problem? More users have reported similar issues while using LibreOffice, and closing the LibreOffice app hides the launcher for them. See bug #790777 and its duplicates.

I don't have LibreOffice and still have this problem. The Dock gets stuck.

Just happened to me as well, for all four viewports (i.e., dock stuck on all four of them, for all windows). First time it's happened to me. Ubuntu 11.04 x64. No pending updates at the time of the problem.

Logging off and back on seemed to have fixed the problem, at least for the last few minutes. After logging out, I did switch to console 1 to see if I had any other processes running. Two pulseaudio procs, which I've observed is normal and I left those alone. One evolution process, something to do with the calendar factory. I killed that one before logging back in, as I don't use evolution. Probably unrelated, but I figured I mention it as I've only rarely noticed that calendar factory proc running in the past.
