If the user installs Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm) and clicks 'Set Default Settings' in the preferences panel then the Unity compiz plugin is removed meaning the panel and launcher are lost from the desktop. I discovered this after a user reported the problem on the forums. A work around to fix it using GUI only can be seen here:
