Bug Description

unity:
  Installed: 3.8.2-0ubuntu1

I noticed this primarily when docking/undocking, but it seems to be even easier to reproduce: it happens if I just change the monitor resolution up.

I put a fullscreen Thunderbird in my upper right workspace, a couple of other apps in my top left, viewing my top left, I used the Monitors app to lower the screen res, and then raise it back again. On the raising, my Thunderbird moved into the upper left workspace.

so when you dock, do you use two monitors, or does your laptop screen blank and your other monitor becomes the only monitor?

When I dock I often get switched to dual monitors, though I want to go to external only (and have set that as the default in the Monitors dialog - a different bug altogether).

However, I can still reliably reproduce this simply by raising my montor resolution. When I lower it first, everything is ok.

The steps to reproduce are pretty clear in the description. I removed the final paragraph which was too vague to be useful, but it is easy to reproduce in a few seconds.
