Bug Description

Unity crashes when I try to connect to a server using an SSH or SMB bookmark in Nautilus.

Steps to replicate:

1. Have a SSH or Samba connection bookmarked in Nautilus
2. Click on the "Home Folder" icon in the Launcher
3. Click on the desired server bookmark
4. Unity crashes and we are left with the nautilus window without borders & title bar, and the system is usually unresponsive

It is happening on both my 64bit desktop and my 32bit laptop.

What debugging information do you need from me to track this one down?

valorin@thorin:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch)
Release: 11.04
Codename: natty
valorin@thorin:~$ unity --version
unity 3.6.6
valorin@thorin:~$ nautilus --version
GNOME nautilus 2.32.2.1

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

Now open your file manager, navigate to your /var/crash directory and open the crash report you wish to submit.
If this fails you will have to open a terminal and file your report with 'ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash' where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. If you get an error that you aren't allowed to access this report you will have to file it with 'sudo ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash'.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

Um... what do I do if there is no .crash file?
I've checked the directory and checked the names and timestamps of all the .crash files in there, none of them match the problem.

Is there anything else I can do?

Changed in unity:
status: Invalid → New

look for .crash file with the name compiz in it.

I looked for compiz, and there isn't one with a date stamp for today in there.

This is the contents of that directory, and the output of 'date'. I have replicated the issue at least 5 times today. (I happens every time!)

Ok, the other computer didn't have a compiz from today in it...
I believe that compiz .crash file was for something else. I have attached it anyway.

But if it was generating them for this crash, there should be atleast 5 in there, and one about an hour ago.

Omer Akram (om26er) wrote :

could you run this .crash file from terminal with 'ubuntu-bug
_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash<https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/737928/+attachment/1919891/+files/_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash>'
from the /var/crash directory. this way the bug will be reported with many
useful logs attached to it.

Ok, done.

Unless these .crash files don't appear twice, I am still not convinced that this is the same bug.

I finally got prompted to report the crash just after it happened this time, and this bug is the result:

Hey people,

I experience the same bug. Unity crashing when clicking on a SMB bookmark. Unfortunately I can not find the bugs mentioned in the comments by Stephen. I get an error page when clicking on them.

@Christophe,
It looks like the bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/738448) is marked as private, so you can't see it. I will see if I can add you or something, but I don't really know how to do that.
You might just need to wait until someone looks at it and opens it up a bit.
