Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

Apparently to make the launcher appear in Unity on the current daily build of Ubuntu 11.04, you have to move the cursor completely into the corner. However, when hovering the Ubuntu icon without touching the corner of the screen, the launcher already fades in a bit, without persisting (i.e. it disappears again the moment the cursor leaves the icon). I found this very confusing, as I had gotten the idea that to open the launcher, you had to hover the icon, but because I didn't touch the corner, it disappeared again the moment I moved my cursor onto the launcher.

A good solution would probably be to either have the launcher persist if the cursor is moved on top of it even when it is semi-transparent, or to not have it fade in at all.

This is even more confusing when you use only slide effect (no fade): the launcher goes in and out depending on where I put the cursor, and the behavior is very unintuitive. I think simplicity should help here: when you hover the ubuntu button (or the rectangular area around it), then the launcher should entirely pop and stay still until the cursor exits that area and the launcher itself. To reconcile with accidental showing of the launcher (e.g. when trying to close a maximized window), there should be no delay before hiding, so that everything is much snappier and natural.
