Custom .desktop-file doesn't show up in Unity

Bug Description

Ubuntu: 13.10
Unity: 7.1.2+13.10.20131014.1-0ubuntu1

- Creating a fully compatible .desktop file in Ubuntu 13.10 and placing it in either ~/.local/share/applications or /usr/share/applications doesn't generate an icon in Unity.

- However, copying an exisiting launcher and editing it does show result, albeit somewhat erratic - icon and exec does update but title stays the same as the original .desktop.

- Here's a screenshot after a new launcher has been added "Mean Streets" (showing up as a desktop launcher in Nautilus), note the lack of the same in Unity:
