This is likely due to the extra strain compositing places on a system. However there are also likely inefficiencies somewhere in compiz or in the graphics drivers as low fps is a problem even on powerful systems playing basic 3d games.

One possible solution is to disable compositing when a 3d game is launched, but as of yet I am unaware of a way to do so seamlessly

For even faster graphics performance in fullscreen games, consider trying:
    CCSM > Composite > Unredirect Fullscreen Windows
But beware, that is broken on NVIDIA (bug 980663)
