Bug Description

The reaction of the global menubar in Firefox is slow - especially on displaying the menu item chosen in HUD.

Steps to reproduce:
a) Start firefox with extension activated
b) Tap ALT key (HUD appears)
c) Type e.g. "addons" - "Tools > Add-ons" appears as the first entry with a noticable delay
d) Press ENTER -> Long delay (several seconds) until addons tab appears

Same also for other menu items.
As using normal menus works really slick, the global menu is a productivity slow-downer in this case.
Compared to Nautilus there the HUD has a fast reaction, also LibreOffice HUD reaction is fast.
I found that Thunderbird has a similar delay as firefox although it seems worse in Firefox.

Firefox 13 on Ubuntu 12.04 with latest updates.
Hardware: Dell Latitude E5500, Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz × 2 (32-bit architecture), 4 GB Memory (currently used 1,2 GB)

Additional note: When clicking the appropriate menus in the top panel, reaction is fast. Just using the HUD the delay occurs.

with me it is a little different, I experience slow reaction in the pulldown menu's as e.g. the bookmarks within firefox.
I shut don hardware acceleration in flash and that seemed to help for a while but now it reacts as slow as before. instead of the menu I first see a dark grey little square.

I can't actually prove this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the slow reaction time for HUD is because it's trying to load ALL the entries in the bookmarks menu, which if you're a bookmarks addict like me, will amount to thousands or tens of thousands.
Possible workaround to exclude all bookmark entries from HUD, and just keep the functional items from that menu, like "Show All Bookmarks"?

Indeed I have many bookmarks (synched around several machines).

I tried inactivating the global menu add-on and indeed, menu is fast again. Is there a way to look at the script of this add on? Iḿ new to programming but sounds like an interesting problem.

Seems to be here:

You can probably use bzr to check that out, but I have no idea how to do that

I can confirm that using a clean profile (without any bookmarks but the default ones), HUD works at a normal speed.

I seem to experience sluggish Firefox performance even without HUD activated. Disabling global menu addon restores normal pep and vigor. Reproducible. Not sure it's the same as what is entered here, but seems related.

I think it has to do with some kind of cache; once I have browse trough a certain part of my bookmark folders those folders respond quick, the ones that I have not visited yet, will be slow at first visit.

This is related to 987060, which documents one of the effects of having a high number of bookmarks.

The same problem with many bookmarks was reported (and has status "fix released") for Chromium as a DBus problem -> #801699. I think this could be also the case here.

* Disabling global menu bar integration addon is a workaround for me.
