Logging out looks like applications are crashing (unprofessional)

Bug Description

When I have multiple Apps opened in Unity and want to shut down my system without closing them first the system looks as if unity crashes. This happens everytime I have multiple Windows open and want to shut down my system. It makes Unity look kind of unprofessional.

Instead of showing the tearing down of X.org Clients Unity should show some kind of splash screen with a feedback for the user that the system is currently shutting down.

It's definately not a functional issue the Shutdown works great. It's purely graphical

It kind of looks like "unity --reset" the Window Manager is suddenly gone and you cannot use anything. It just feels awkward to me as user when the system looks "crashed"

I believe it will actually take some other desktop component to cope with compiz to make the shutdown smooth not sure what though.

Confirmed. This annoys me too.

Part of the problem I think is that gtk-window-decorator (and compiz?) is killed before all the applications. So suddenly all your windows lose their borders and titles, and Unity vanishes too, but the apps still linger a bit longer.

Visually it's jarring and does look like something has crashed. Ironically, I believe until recently it actually was the unityshell (in the compiz process) crashing. But compiz and unity should not be told to shut down until the windows are closed or hidden at least.

I suggest either:
1. A full screen shutdown splash; or
2. Hiding all windows during shutdown (the same as Ctrl+Super+D).

I prefer #2. That way if logout/shutdown fails or hangs for some reason, you can get your desktop back rather than being stuck with a hung splash screen.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug. We have tried to recreate this on the latest release of Ubuntu and cannot reproduce it. This bug is being marked as Invalid. If you believe the problem to still exist in the latest version of Ubuntu please comment on why that is the case and change the bug status to NEW.
