Bug Description

Mark Shuttleworth says that a privacy policy covering collection of user data and handling of it is available but in discussing this with two different canonical employees it appears that no privacy policy covering such is available publicly.

Given that someone marked bug 1054776 as a duplicate of this (incorrectly, since this is, at best, a subset of it) and that this seems to be an attempt to express the same concerns in a more diplomatic way, I'm marking it as a duplicate since bug 1054776 is the one which is getting all the activity.

As has already been stated in Comment #1, this isn't a dupe of Bug #1054776. The question of whether the shopping lense should be included in home lens by default is orthogonal to the question of whether shopping-lens and similar data needs clarification in the privacy policy.

If you're going to dupe this again, please comment on why.

Marking confirmed as it affects multiple users and also Canonical Legal has confirmed they were not briefed on the feature therefore despite any announcements about a privacy policy or proper disclosure non such exists.

While I do understand the reasoning behind this 'feature' and I do think it would be good for Ubuntu, Linux and Open Source as a whole if more funding comes its way, the issues associated with the shopping lens are worrying me. Combine that with some unavoidable bugs in the new code and user disappointment is guaranteed.

Sorry for being sceptical and probably sarcastic, but I think that most users will find their quick and final solution in "sudo apt-get remove --purge unity-lens-shopping". I did it within minutes after upgrading to 12.10 beta2 last weekend.

cheers

Has this issue been solved before the release as per John's comment?

Well, there's the legal link in bottom right of the dash, so I guess this bug is at least partially fixed.
