Bug Description

Multiple problems in this, so let's let the screenshot speak to itself:
http://www.foopics.com/showfull/07083531697b7ca4b5b5b0350783a173

1) When pressing workspaces, left side next to the dock shows part of the desktop
2) Workspaces only shows 2 virtual desktops
3) After clicking back to desktop the 'gfx bug' appears around the almost-fullscreen windowselection desktop: http://www.foopics.com/showfull/ad8afc74c4ad9d3d2f89c9af75adbe56
4) Also as shown above, if you happen to hover over some icon in the dock and go to workspaces, the icon text stays floating on the screen until you return to the workspace.
5) Whole thing works completely different than in Unity3D, inconsistent, you need to select target window before you return to desktop whereas Unity3D just moves you right into the workspace.

A bit messy explanation but hopefully someone gets something out of it.

Hey, thanks for the report. Some questions:

1. How many virtual desktops have you set up (/apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces in gconf)?
2. Are you using the default metacity or compiz?
3. To clarify your case 5), with the spread open (showing all workspaces), when you click on the wallpaper of a workspace, it only activates the workspace, you still need to click to activate an actual application. Unity behaves differently. That correct?

I will split your case 4) into a separate bug, as I can confirm it.

Hey.

1) Haven't changed anything - this is the default behavior in Oneirich for me.

2) Just the default 'Ubuntu 2D' entry from the login screen

3) Yes. In unity there's super-w shortcut to execute 'Expo' compiz plugin (like expose in os x) which i greatly miss, but moving between workspaces doesn't require selecting an app within the workspace when coming back. I found this pretty confusing what's going on, especially combined with graphical bugs. In any way, I think it should work consistent way in both.

Ati's fgrlx driver by the way, if that has anything to do with gfx problems (or 1920x1080 resolution, somehow seems that widescreen resolution is somehow hardcoded for 16:10 and causing 'hall of mirrors' effect for 16:9, but I'm just guessing here).

Could I ask you to try disabling compositing temporarily to see if this problem still appears?

To do so, open gconf-editor and navigate to apps/metacity/general/, and change the compositing_manager key to false.

For your point 3, I encourage you to report this bug separately, it will be more easily seen and other people can add their weight to it and get it done faster. Thanks!

Actually it's already been done. Check out bug:757312

Hey.

Disabling compositor had no effect regarding gfx bug with workspaces. num_workspaces was at 2 though, so changing that to 4 brought the workspaces back.

Also related to this, I cannot drag windows to another workspace which kind of makes workspaces useless.

Hi Tarmo,
it's good to see that the num_workspaces setting was respected, which was one of the core problems you were reporting. The layout of the virtual spaces in the spread was as expected.

Are you still seeing a strip of wallpaper between the launcher & the spread?

Yeah, I'm still seeing that, so that's the real bug here :) I don't know the code, but it still looks like it's somehow hardcoded for 16:10 widescreens, leaving a gfx bug line for 16:9 resolutions. But again just guessing.

Ok, I changed the title of this bug to clarify the problem.

What screen resolution are you running? Would you please run "apport-collect 879488" to give us some more info on your setup. As yet I cannot reproduce this.

Also when clicking back to workspace to select window, gfx error kind of doubles: http://www.foopics.com/showfull/880769e5251a5cfbe09aca0ee582d121

Thanks for the extra info. I will have access to a monitor with the same resolution next week, so I'll try to reproduce it then.
