Bug Description

Ubuntu 11.04 final
3.8.4.1-0ubuntu2~bzr560 (unity-2d)
Dell Latitude D600 laptop

I wonder if someone else can reproduce this issue:

1. Start Empathy - it's menu does appear in the panel.
2. Click the Close button in Empathy's title bar which actually minimizes Empathy to the app indicator menu in the panel.
3. Open up the app indicator menu and click on "Chat" to restore Empathy.
4. When you hover the mouse over the panel - Empathy's menu no longer appears in the panel even though Empathy does have the focus or at least it looks like it does.

I have to click on the desktop to remove focus from Empathy's window and than click on Empathy's window to make Empathy's menu appear again. I hope I have explained this well enough. The reason I think it might be related to unity-2d is that I run 11.04 final on my desktop using unity and compiz and Empathy does not exhibit this behavior.

Not sure if would help but I have attached my xsession log.

I forgot to mention the version of Empathy is 2.34.0.

Adam, does this happen consistently, or at random? I’m asking because I just tested a couple of times, following the steps you described, and I cannot observe the bug.

Olivier, it does happen consistently when I follow these steps. it is the only app that is exhibiting this behaviour up to this point.

I just managed to reproduce. The first attempt didn’t exhibit the issue, but closing the window again and invoking it via the messaging indicator now results in an empty panel (no appname, no menu bar).

Hello gentlemen, after the latest round of updates of unity-2d - the issue with minimizing and restoring has been fixed but when I first start Empathy - there is no appname and no menubar. I can click on the desktop and back on the window and it appears. The unity-2d build I currently have is 3.8.8-0ubuntu2~bzr615. Can y'all confirm this one?

Hi, I can reproduce a similar issue with synaptic, all the time. Please let me know if someone else can reproduce this as well:

- Open a terminal
- run /usr/sbin/synaptic
- a dialog will appear to warn you about missing root privileges, click on "Close"
- observe the window title: application name and menus are missing, until you switch to another application.

I get the same issue with 3D unity in 11.10, upgraded from 11.04 the other day. It always starts open and maximised after logging in, the menu appears ok then. I always close it and virtually never use it, but if I do decide to open it from the panel I don't get a menu but it does say "Empathy IM Client" in the panel. Likely to be the same issue or is this 2D only?

The same issue is on 11.10. I have copied settings from 11.04 installation had before and it looks like there are no global menu for Empathy Contact List window. I am not sure if it is previous settings are not handled or a bug.
Another interesting issue with Empathy: it stopped logging conversations and shows me a list of old ones instead even the preference option says to keep log.

There seem to be similarities between this and bug #886606 - Some apps show no menu in panel until click away and back.

This really looks like bug #886606 as Colin says, the fix for it is part of Unity-2d 5.10/Ubuntu 12.04. Can any of you guys having this particular problem check under that versions and see if the problem is still there?
