Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

The top item in the unity side panel 'loses' its tooltip and the right-click menu.
It doesn't seem to matter what application is at the top and I have not yet found a reliable way of reproducing the problem, although it happens every session at some point.
killall unity-2d-launcher fixes it temporarily
Running on PowerPC

affects: unity (Ubuntu) → unity-2d (Ubuntu)

Thanks for the report pauljwells. If you find a way to reliably reproduce the issue, please edit the description, that would be very useful to help us understand and fix the issue.

I still haven't pinpointed what causes this problem (except that it always happens, sooner or later) but I have just found that once it has happened, I can drag the top icon to a different location in the launcher and the problem stays with the icon rather than staying for whatever is at the top.

Say Nautilus was top and loses the tooltip, I drag it to third place in the list so that Firefox is now top. Firefox has a tooltip but Nautilus doesn't.

Very interesting observation Paul, thanks for the feedback. When that happens to you again, could you please attach the file ~/.xsession-errors to this bug report? It may contain useful debugging information.

Here's an xsession.errors file from just after the error appeared :-)

Thanks a lot Paul.
Unfortunately, from a very quick glance I couldn’t find any hint in the logs about what is going wrong.

Hi again Olivier!

Is there any way I can build a debug version of unity-2d so that I can keep a term open while I'm using it and try to catch this event?

At the moment there is no "verbose" mode that would spit out more logs than what’s in the .xsession-errors file, unfortunately, so that wouldn’t help. You can still run the launcher from a terminal though, the debug output will go there instead of to .xsession-errors.

Just installed unity-2d on an X64 (Intel Atom) netbook and I get exactly the same behaviour.

NEW INFO!

I'm running unity-2d bzr635 and I just found that the third item in the panel lost its tooltip!
If it makes a difference, Nautilus loses its tooltip in position one and Thunderbird in position three.

It happens a lot less frequently than on the released builds, but still happens...

@saviq I haven't been able to install Oneric yet - tried last night from the ppc daily alternate but it crashes. I'll keep trying
