The machine that has this issue uses a GeForce 8400M GS and version 312.18 of the proprietary Nvidia drivers, and it's 'apport-bug' files are attached to bug #1154723.

Another machine I use that does NOT have the issue uses a GeForce 7350 LE and the 304.64 version drivers and I have attached an 'apport-bug' log file for comparison.

The only thing I can think of at the moment that might be a factor is libcairo2 because nothing else makes any sense and I think I recall that the panel uses cairo but you can correct me if I'm wrong:

Machine that HAS problem:
libcairo-gobject2 1.12.14-0ubuntu1~precise1 [origin: LP-PPA-xorg-edgers]
libcairo2 1.12.14-0ubuntu1~precise1 [origin: LP-PPA-xorg-edgers]

Machine without problem:
 libcairo-gobject2 1.10.2-6.1ubuntu3
 libcairo2 1.10.2-6.1ubuntu3

If you remove the xorg-edgers PPA, does the problem go away?

Problem goes away when I removed the ppa via ppa-purge.
