Bug Description

I'm trying, but failing to install Debian GNU/kFreeBSD using unetbootin 2.81 for Windows.

Using the following ISO image: http://glibc-bsd.alioth.debian.org/install-cd/kfreebsd-i386/current/debian-20080218-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso I get the following results when trying to install:

Using a USB key:

The grub menu contains two entries, one named "Default", which gives the following error when booting it:
Loading /ubnkern.
Invalid or corrupt kernel image.
boot:

One named "Untitled Entry Grub 0":
Loading /boot/vmlboot
Invalid or corrupt kernel image.
boot:

Installing using a harddisk:
(hd0,1)
Filesystem type is ntfs, partition type 0x7
   [FreeBSD-elf, <0x400000:0x476d5c:0x0>, <0x877d60:0x9f314:0x497f4>, shtab=0x961488, entry=0x447cd0]
initrd /unetbtin/ubninit

Error 19: Linux kernel must be loaded before initrd

Press any key to continue...

The Debian GNU/kFreeBSD install disc is according to documentation rather like the official FreeBSD install discs.

Similar problem here using FreeBSD 7.1-BETA2-i386-bootonly.iso.
Booting from USB stick yields "Invalid or corrupt kernel image."

WTF?
I downloaded the image from another mirror, on a different machine, and still the same issue.

Invalid or corrupt kernel image.

I've the same problem. I'm using unetbootin 304-1 on Ubuntu 9.04, and I'm trying to install debian-20090117-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso on an fat32-formatted usb disk (/dev/sdb1). Both entries in the boot menu yields "Invalid or corrupt kernel image.".

I managed to install kfreebsd-i386 by using a variation of this guide: http://blog.zelut.org/tag/unetbootin/

1) Download http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/lubi/unetbootin-freebsd70rev146.sh
2) chmod 755 unetbootin*sh && sudo ./unetbootin*sh installmode=usbdrive targetpartition=/dev/sdX1 formatpartition=yes
3) sudo mount -o loop debian-20090117-kfreebsd-i386-install.iso /mnt/
4) sudo mount /dev/sdX1 /media/disk
5) sudo cp -RvLu /mnt/* /media/disk/ && sudo sync
6) Boot into the usb disk
7) Don't select any packages, partition as usual and select standard installation from DOS drive
8) Select "no" on most questions. Some questions will appear on other consoles (alt-f2 or alt-f3). Most weird: The root password prompt was on console alt-f2, but I had to enter the password on console alt-f1.
9) Finish up and enjoy your new freebsd installation

Same here, with Ubuntu Jaunty.

You should be able to boot by typing "ubnkern" (without the quotes) when a kernel image is prompted, but here, it ends up with a kernel panic.

I've had problems with a corrupted extracted ISO as well. In my case, attempting to install Easy Peasy v1.5 on an Acer Aspire One netbook. The Resulting ISO on a bootable USB stick would fail during the final installation to HD (Google "errno 5 input/output error" and one can see this is a common problem).

The problem was three corrupted files within /cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs.

Taking the exact same easypeasy-1.5.img.iso file and re-extracting it to the same USB key, but this time using WinRAR, resulted in a functioning system that can install to my netbook.

I believe there is some general bug in UNetbootin which sometimes corrupts the resulting files as it's extracted from the ISO image.

Version: unetbootin-eeeubuntu-windows-276.exe [Run on a Dell Core2 Duo, WinXP Pro SP2]
Target system: Acer Aspire One 1GB/160GB HD

I can reconfirm this bug for Version 608-1, via Debian testing. I attemt to install FreeNAS 9.3 Stable onto HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L. A test with the Ubuntu netinstall image got me further into the installation process.
