Upon a format of my USB and running unetbootin (for Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint) and it creates boot disk "successfully"

When I boot it in my netbook it says "error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found." and enters grub rescue.

I've tried many distro's, with live and without, none of them will boot grub and then any version of linux.

Please fix, if I can't use it, likely others can't as well!

is this unetbootin for windows, macos, or the linux version? it doesn't even use grub, syslinux is the bootloader. did you perhaps use the linux version and ignored the "please install syslinux" warning?

No, I would not have ignored that message if it was displayed to me... It
was not displayed to me...

I received _no_ errors other than that error message on booting the system

It needs to be installed on the PC I use unetbootin correct? I can't see
how I'd install it to a not working system.

syslinux is already the newest version (3:6.03+dfsg-14.1+deb9u1).
syslinux set to manually installed.

I believe that answers the assumption that I've ignored an error message...

Maybe this time we can not jump to conclusions about users ignoring error
messages... That was very asshat-ish of you.

Sorry for multiple posts, things have changed slightly...

It sure looks like grub to me... Every time I used unetbootin before it showed a grub boot menu.

I did use unetbootin just a few months ago, with no problems...

Not sure why all of the sudden it gives me this error.

The netbook I was trying to boot is now broken as a result of my fist. Unfortunately this means I cannot test it on the same computer. At least I have no shortage of PC's (yet lol)

I will try one time with another computer, to see if it gives the same error and repost here.

1) perhaps try running the windows version of unetbootin? sometimes there's trouble writing to mbr on linux systems. 2) if that one still doesn't work, try reformatting your USB drive as fat32 from windows? the fact that there's some phantom grub install on the usb drive seems troubling and suggests the formatting tool didn't actually format the MBR. the bootloader installed to the MBR has always been syslinux, grub is only used on EFI systems, and I'm assuming by netbook you mean a pre-EFI system 3) you could try an older version of unetbootin from https://github.com/unetbootin/unetbootin/releases say 638 if it is indeed a regression, I wouldn't expect so because I don't believe I've modified anything relating to bootloader installation but you could try

Yes sorry I just noticed the "perhaps" in that sentence. You weren't
ass-hat-ish, I apologize.

If it has something to do with the MBR I think I can write a new one using
GParted. I'll format it as Fat32 again and try it with another computer.

If that does not work, I will grind my teeth while booting windows to try
unetbootin there
