Thanks Erick. The original idea was Tylers though... i just rearranged it a bit and added a white border so it will work on both light and dark backgrounds. Here is the one without the "saturn ring".

I am not sure about the "g" though.. in my mind it's not important to see that it say "ugr". Far from all logos do that. I might also do one where i flip the "r" horizontally.

As I said in another thread, its' the difference between a "well dressed man" and a "sharp dressed man" ;^)

It just adds something that makes one want to smile and keep on rockin'.

One other thing. I don't think I've seen anything similar to that so I can't imagine any complaints from the rest of the Linux world.

Consider we've been told that the use of Ubuntu in the name is not allowed. Makes me think of U-lite which began as Ubuntulite.

You'll now notice that distro is "dormant" since the introduction of Lubuntu, even though Lubuntu is not yet included as a true *buntu distro, but I like the idea of sticking with UGR.

We can absolutely "own" our roots but we should also distance ourselves from any existing distro :^)

Should there ever be a complaint about using U in the name we could potentially change to PGR (pure gnome remix) with only minimal change. That of course is just an example.

@ Daniel, is the backwards "r" intentional?

Can't say I'm crazy about that, but that's only one persons opinion.

I like this:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548384/ugr-logo1.png

Of course we'd need to change shades from light to dark, possibly even colors, depending on the background, but IMHO that is just beautiful!

Yes, it was intentional just to show.. like a "concept" so to speak. The one you mentioned is my favourite too.

I feel that the direction you are headed takes the readability way from it. We want people to know it's UGR, right? In the one you are linking to, it seems like it's just a symbol. I can see the UGR in there, because I know to look for it, but it's getting further and further abstracted with each revision. What do you guys think? Shouldn't the UGR be readable, i.e. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548658/ugr-icon-logo.png?

Revision history for this message
Daniel Sandman (almehdi-deactivatedaccount) wrote :

Are the Ubuntu logo readable or any other OS's logos by the way? Every one are identified by their symbol. I liked the idea you had on letters though. It is difficult to make a symbol about space that does not resemble a planetary body. So in my mind it is not important that the letters are "readable". For me it is more important that it looks good and are disctinctive.

My favorites are still the logos that are similar to the original concepts, although I do like some of the variations talked about here.

The saturn rings concept could go somewhere, but I think it needs to be refined a bit more.

For now, the official branding is https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548658/ugr-icon-logo.png, and the original concept by Chris. I appreciate the efforts of everyone here very much.

Tyler, the goal of the ugr logo is to look professional. Think Ubuntu, think Apple, think OpenOffice, think Toyota, think Nike. Your logo doesn't seem to match the idea, and It doesn't seem to relate to UGR. The eternal, underlying theme of ugr from here-on-out will be space. Look at out roadmap for the names.

As a spoiler, UGR 2.0 coming out late this year will likely be named Fornax, Centauri, Deep Field or Sirius
