Post your logo concepts here. I will start us off.

I simply love this one from Daniel Sandman:

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Thanks Erick. The original idea was Tylers though... i just rearranged it a bit and added a white border so it will work on both light and dark backgrounds. Here is the one without the "saturn ring".

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Gray shaded version..

I am not sure about the "g" though.. in my mind it's not important to see that it say "ugr". Far from all logos do that. I might also do one where i flip the "r" horizontally.

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

As I said in another thread, its' the difference between a "well dressed man" and a "sharp dressed man" ;^)

It just adds something that makes one want to smile and keep on rockin'.

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

One other thing. I don't think I've seen anything similar to that so I can't imagine any complaints from the rest of the Linux world.

Consider we've been told that the use of Ubuntu in the name is not allowed. Makes me think of U-lite which began as Ubuntulite.

You'll now notice that distro is "dormant" since the introduction of Lubuntu, even though Lubuntu is not yet included as a true *buntu distro, but I like the idea of sticking with UGR.

We can absolutely "own" our roots but we should also distance ourselves from any existing distro :^)

Should there ever be a complaint about using U in the name we could potentially change to PGR (pure gnome remix) with only minimal change. That of course is just an example.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

gray shaded with a more visible "g".

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

@ Daniel, is the backwards "r" intentional?

Can't say I'm crazy about that, but that's only one persons opinion.

I like this:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548384/ugr-logo1.png

Of course we'd need to change shades from light to dark, possibly even colors, depending on the background, but IMHO that is just beautiful!

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Yes, it was intentional just to show.. like a "concept" so to speak. The one you mentioned is my favourite too.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

I feel that the direction you are headed takes the readability way from it. We want people to know it's UGR, right? In the one you are linking to, it seems like it's just a symbol. I can see the UGR in there, because I know to look for it, but it's getting further and further abstracted with each revision. What do you guys think? Shouldn't the UGR be readable, i.e. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548658/ugr-icon-logo.png?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Are the Ubuntu logo readable or any other OS's logos by the way? Every one are identified by their symbol. I liked the idea you had on letters though. It is difficult to make a symbol about space that does not resemble a planetary body. So in my mind it is not important that the letters are "readable". For me it is more important that it looks good and are disctinctive.

I personally prefer the Saturn logo. I do think that it would be cool to put some color or transparency into the saturn ring.

I also think that it's time to get our own sound theme, so I had a friend, who happens to be a musician, create some sample startup and shutdown sounds. They're included here as .wav files.

My favorites are still the logos that are similar to the original concepts, although I do like some of the variations talked about here.

The saturn rings concept could go somewhere, but I think it needs to be refined a bit more.

For now, the official branding is https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70548658/ugr-icon-logo.png, and the original concept by Chris. I appreciate the efforts of everyone here very much.

I think that we will move towards a redesign of UGR's image after Andromeda is released. The saturn rings would be great, if it could be tweaked a bit.

summary: - Logo and Branding need to be solidified.
+ Logo and Branding need to be solidified

I think that the Saturn logo should get flattened out a bit.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Did a more logo with a staurn symbol. Could be a bit more refined though.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Another staurn logo but with shadow and out-written text.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

I really like the direction this is headed. I will fork your design
and start working on some variations.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

The source xcf of saturn logo. The paths need to be refined and so the shades. I just made a quick image as a concept.

My imagination is not that good but wanted to show a logo not based on the letters as a proof of concept. Will do some more work on it and maybe try to figure out more designs. ;)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Damn! My Gimp just crashed on me and i hadn't saved the saturn logo... will have to redo it.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Found it.. it crashed at the same moment i saved and it seams like it got saved :)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Improved it a bit...

I like this newest version, but could you create a version, where the UGR text logo is used in the bottom?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Which one of the UGR logos?

I will post it back as 3ds .... obj and blend if you want ......

Daniel, Since we are trying to migrate towards UGR as the name, instead of Ubuntu Gnome remix, we'd like a version of your new logo, without any words on it.

Improved it a bit futher and changed so it say UGR instead.

The new Saturn logo concepts are amazing. Can you do a render with
ugr on the right side?

Daniel, your logos are absolutely awesome. If you could upload the logo from your UGR-clean wallpaper, that would be awesome. I want that to be our official logo, plus I think a decal of that would look awesome on my bedroom wall. ;)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Lol! I am traviling today so will try to do it as the latest tomorrow. Is the coloring good? Should i change the bevel and make it look flatter?

Yeah, that would be good. Can the bevel go outward? Also, can it not say UGR on it?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

I could try out some alternate designs of it. I am not sure an outward bevel would look good but i will test it to see.. might add some shadow to get it a bit more visible though.

Think about how you would like to see it as a static cling for a window, and make that.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

@Chris: Am not sure what a static cling is (am not a native english speaker) ;)

Are you talking about an icon?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Have don a couple of more icons.. need to head out little but will do some more experimenting soon.

They look better on a not white background and resized down a little. But i need to do more work on them. Just say if the direction i am going here is wrong.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

@Daniel I love those. A static cling is a clear plastic sticker-like creation with designs or logos on it, using this principle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Static_cling#In_advertising

Daniel Horak (daniel.horak) wrote :

Another type of logo, I don't know, if you want to stay on the Ubuntu+Gnome way, but I created a logo based on these two, hope not to have broke some proprietary laws. Based on the xubuntu logo, I combined the Gnome foot with fresh new green colour, and rotated it a bit. the foot is cutted, so I hope it can be used...just for the case, UGR wants to be an official derivate for ubuntu

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Did two new ones that have a smallish bevel.. One gray and another colored..

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Can you make the blue one be the brown color you used in the colored wallpaper? (the one now used in the bootsplash)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Sure! Here it is ;)

It has a plane surface... i could add a paperish grovel if you want.

Yeah, please do add the paper texture, and can you make the brown a little bit darker?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Something like this?

Yeah. Exactly like that. Can you make the image file a square?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Alright! Hope i understood you right that you wanted the sides to be equally long.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

I agree that we need something more than just the "ugr" logo, but I feel that the saturn logo has been regressing with each iteration. Here is a different perspective on a new direction to take the logo in. Thoughts?

Tyler, the goal of the ugr logo is to look professional. Think Ubuntu, think Apple, think OpenOffice, think Toyota, think Nike. Your logo doesn't seem to match the idea, and It doesn't seem to relate to UGR. The eternal, underlying theme of ugr from here-on-out will be space. Look at out roadmap for the names.

As a spoiler, UGR 2.0 coming out late this year will likely be named Fornax, Centauri, Deep Field or Sirius

In other branding news, we have a Plymouth project and a wallpaper project open. Check them out at http://www.launchpad.net/ugr-wallpapers and http://www.launchpad.net/plymouth-theme-ugr

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

Hey Chris, thanks for the feedback. The idea I was going for was "stylised-abstract-planet". Maybe this is closer to what you're looking for? Note I've also messed around with the "ugr" part and I think having the R capitalised looks pretty nifty. Thoughts?

Tyler, I feel that these logos still don't match the look & feel that we're going for. Additionally, the majority of the decision-making surrounding logos has already been decided, as have wallpapers.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

I'm sorry to hear that. Nothing against Daniel personally, but I feel that the "saturn logo" is plain and boring. I will take this as an opportunity to bow out and move on to something else. Cheers.

Daniel, could you take the newest design and add one of the areas from the inside of the old saturn logo?

Sort of like this, but with the new, brown design style.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Am on it... i have been playing around with Inkscape and Scribus lately and might do a remake of the logo in SVG instead. It would make it better suited for resizing.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Have done it as an SVG now. Which should make it easier to handle in the future.

Hey, Daniel. I'm revamping the Plymouth themes. Can you take this wallpaper:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/70840467/ugr-wallpaper6-color.png

and put the new logo in instead of the old one?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Here it is...

Can you mock up a logo for 'Bridge Linux'? I particularly like that name, since we're 'Bridging the gap between Ubuntu and Gnome'.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

I could but a logo is a lot of work and as the naming is not decided yet i rather not at this time. Although it is a nice name and i have an idea how the logo could look. The name "Bridge Linux" would also in one way alter the current space theme of the project.

But if you feel it is very important for you.. of course i would do it. ;)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

I had som bore time so decided to make a quick mock up anyway ;)

It ain’t anything near a finished logo but still show little how i thought.

Hey, Daniel. Could you make some calmer/ subtler wallpapers that we could use for the boot splash?

We need one for startup/shutdown and a different one for standby/resume.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Have also had that thought.. and my thoughts have gone in a similar way as the current Ubuntu one. Here the naming of our dist would be nice to have.

Anyway.. will do something. ;)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

@Chris: The new simplified and calmer plymouth background can be found here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ugr-meta/+bug/778065

UGR are a bit too short to look good if made in a similar fashion as Ubuntu has.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

The naming poll was kind of a fail. I'm creating a new one on our brainstorm.

Hey, Daniel. Could you possibly mock up a logo for another project we're working on? it's called LinLife. it's a creative suite package for Linux.

http://www.launchpad.net/linlife

Thanks

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Do it have a homepage or something where i could read up more on it? So i could get some ideas to suit the project better.. ;)

Actually, i've already got a logo. I'll upload a mockup of the homescreen of the application. I need some design help.

Unless there are any objections, I am proposing the latest svg clean saturn render by Daniel as the official logo:
https://launchpadlibrarian.net/71450644/ugr-clean-saturn-logo1.svg

@Daniel: could you possibly provide the source (gimp .xcf) please? BTW, thanks for your hard work.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

BTW, I think we should stay with the brown coloring, as it is not currently in use by Ubuntu or a derivative.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

Actually, since that's an .svg, don't give me a gimp .xcf ;). Give me whatever inkscape (or your vector graphics editor) puts out, please.

Everyone okay with https://launchpadlibrarian.net/71450644/ugr-clean-saturn-logo1.svg as the official logo?

no.
needs an iconic color and texturedness. like green!

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

I would agree with chris that we need an iconic color. If we do a green, perhaps one that goes with the Ubuntu orange, but isn't too crazy.

Daniel, can you use any of the files, and make it green?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

How about this? ;)?field.comment=How about this? ;)

Good, but can you add some gloss and slight texture? like the pinstripes on the navbar on ubuntu.com?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Sure.. I am not sure what you mean by pinstripes though.. can't see any textures on the site.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Did i select the correct shade of green btw..?

Yeah, but there should be some lighter strips running through the logo on a
diagonal. Like 2px thick 3 px in between them. and they should follow the
shading.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Ahh.. you mean like a bevel or border.. sure, will do that.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :
