I posted a variation on this along with a full-text logo concept over in the "Gubuntu as project name" bug. Here is it again for simplicity. The logo you uploaded (especially the dark one) has some issues with anti-aliasing. Also I feel that the r should stick out a bit more to the right so it doesn't blend in too well with the g. What ya' think?

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

@ Tyler those logos look really good, but we have been told by the GNOME and Canonical people that we cannot modify their logos or incorporate their logos into other logos.

@ Chris thanks for the wallpapers so far. Note that we need an open format of graphics work to be fully open source. A GIMP .xcf file for the UGR logos is sufficient, I don't think we need anything for the wallpapers

Yeah, I think a full re-brand including logo/icon, new wallpapers and a new
website would be a great target for Andromeda. What is the target release
date for Andromeda?

I particularly like the addition of the Saturn ring to the logo Daniel Sandman posted in post #28. It really adds a bit flare, hard to explain I guess, but it seems to just visually "pop" for me.

Sort of like the difference between a "well dressed man" and a "sharp dressed man" a la ZZ Top ;^)

The process for adding wallpapers to the package and how ugr-wallpapers works needs to be documented on the wiki so we don't make the world end when adding wallpapers.

Hi,

I think most people want to use UGR because they want to run stock GNOME 3 on Ubuntu, so why not just let them have GNOME 3's default wallpaper, with no branding whatsoever? Most users don't really gain anything from having UGR written on their wallpaper...

Revision history for this message
Julien Olivier (julo) wrote :

By the way, the same could be said for the boot and GDM screens. Why not simply use GNOME's default? It's already very nice and elegant.

Revision history for this message
Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

I personally think all decisions regarding default appearance, default apps, etc. need to be left up to JC and Chris. And given the amount of effort Daniel Sandman has put forward he could potentially cast the "tie-breaking" vote should JC and Chris disagree on anything artwork related.

That's not to say opinions aren't welcome, but many decisions will have to be made with the introduction of gnome3 and GTK+ 3 in Oneiric and, in order for those decisions to be made in a timely manner, there will need to be timely responses ;^)

I'd largely consider the implementation of UGR into the Natty base to be a proving ground for what's to come implementing UGR into the Oneiric base. I certainly appreciate the "sane" dev schedule, judging from Oneiric Alpha1 iso-testing much patience is going to be needed.

Revision history for this message
JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

@Julien GNOME's wallpapers are included. The Ubuntu wallpapers are also included if you do not manually remove them. We use the default GDM 3 theme. GNOME does not have a plymouth boot theme: Ubuntu does, and we have replaced it with ours. The reason we do this is branding - we want some name recognition.

@Erick Yep. We are moving to integrate with Ubuntu more closely in Oneiric, and provide some GNOME 3 parts that are missing/ incomplete (Cantarell, shell extensions, etc). UGR will probably be in the Universe repo.

Revision history for this message
Julien Olivier (julo) wrote :

@JC Hulce

I have no problem with the inclusion of UGR wallpapers. But please don't change GNOME's default wallpaper. As for the plymouth boot theme, you're right that GNOME doesn't have one. That's the only place, IMO, where it is logical to use branding, to show which distribution is starting...

By the way, I was just writing this, not because I think that UGR is doing too much branding, but just so that you know that I, at least, like it the way it currently is. Please don't decide to change the GDM theme, the default wallpaper and the default GTK/icon theme as this could possibly piss off people who love upstream GNOME (like Ubuntu does with its very unpopular brown/orange/aubergine themes).

RE: Display manager and it's themes. Since Oneiric is changing from gdm to LightDM I think we'll have to take a "wait and see" position. From what I've read ldm is much easier to "theme" but I've yet to play with it at all.

I always preferred a fairly generic gdm theme (after gnome broke gdm easy theming) like Karmic's black background. Otherwise the "flow" from splash to desktop can appear rather unfinished, eg; UGR splash, gnome's blue drapes @ gdm, then UGR wallpaper on the desktop.
