I like the themes shown here so far. Someone needs to track down what package in ubuntu/gnome wallpapers go in though in order to ship them.

I've made a tar.gz package already. I'm looking for the package. Why can't we just look in synaptic?

Here's a basic tar.gz with all the wallpapers we have so far. Please post some more!

Here's an updated tar.gz with our newest wallpapers.

Well, we now have 20 wallpapers. We'd still like some more, so we can vote for our favourites. I'd really appreciate some activity here... Here's a tar.gz with all 20 and credits

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

Are we able to use "Ubuntu Gnome Remix" or does it have to be "UGR"?

It would be preferred if you use UGR, because we may re-purpose the Acronym. I have included one logo here. I'll upload the other in the next post.

Here's the light coloured version of the logo.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

I posted a variation on this along with a full-text logo concept over in the "Gubuntu as project name" bug. Here is it again for simplicity. The logo you uploaded (especially the dark one) has some issues with anti-aliasing. Also I feel that the r should stick out a bit more to the right so it doesn't blend in too well with the g. What ya' think?

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

@ Tyler those logos look really good, but we have been told by the GNOME and Canonical people that we cannot modify their logos or incorporate their logos into other logos.

@ Chris thanks for the wallpapers so far. Note that we need an open format of graphics work to be fully open source. A GIMP .xcf file for the UGR logos is sufficient, I don't think we need anything for the wallpapers

All I can say is 'Wow!' These are excellent!

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

Hrmm. Well, I guess I have more work to do since we can't use the Ubuntu/Gnome logos. I will work something up and post an update as soon as possible.

If you could remove the circle of friends logo for now, that would be great.

I believe we can use the Ubuntu font.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

Here is the UGR "full" and "icon" logos in high(er)-res, transparent PNG.

Tyler Morgan (digismack) wrote :

Hrmm. Couldn't do more than one attachment per post, so here is the "Icon" logo.

Okay. I like the full logo, but I have a minor issue with the icon logo in that most of the wallpapers are basically set in stone now. I think we could restyle the imagery after the first major release? Once Andromeda comes out, we can change logos and stuff.

Yeah, I think a full re-brand including logo/icon, new wallpapers and a new
website would be a great target for Andromeda. What is the target release
date for Andromeda?

Finally a break from iso-testing. There were seven full rounds for Natty final.

Just checking over all of this and I'm very impressed.

I particularly like the addition of the Saturn ring to the logo Daniel Sandman posted in post #28. It really adds a bit flare, hard to explain I guess, but it seems to just visually "pop" for me.

Sort of like the difference between a "well dressed man" and a "sharp dressed man" a la ZZ Top ;^)

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Here is a little reworked wallpaper of my previous attempt.

Cosmic should be released today. The next release is Constellation, due May 8th. I think we really need to focus mostly on making stuff work, but I think that we should have branding, once we figure out where to put the files.

Also, I like the saturn ring, but the G blends into the U a bit too much, making it look like an 8 or something... Can you lower it a bit?

Also, Can we leave the wallpapers alone for now? It would be kind of a pain to go in and change all of the logos for 25 pictures. I don't have a version without a logo for most of them...

Actually, the version with the Saturn ring is better. I'll add it to a few of the wallpapers, but it would be great to have a white-based option for darkly colored wallpapers.

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Ok, i'll make some variations of it. I'll add the xcf if someone else want to play with it.

Hey, I tried opening the xcf file, and it didn't work. Maybe I'm using an older version of Gimp.

The most important though.. is that they are made from pictures that are licenced to creative commons or otherwice free to use. We do not want a situation where the wallpaper is copyrighted and or not allowed to be used freely.

Hey, Coz. I was the one you spoke with earlier.

It would be awesome if you could actually remove the logos completely from your previously submitted work. If that wouldn't look good, you can find the new logo here:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/71450644/ugr-clean-saturn-logo1.svg

Also, is it okay if I cut the flower wallpaper out of the final product?

Daniel Sandman (almehdi) wrote :

Although i am pretty sure Coz will make a much better job on this i though i put up something i made earlier for my phone as a background. It might be the wrong theme on it as it is a forrest. The same technique could be used with space in mind though. Like using planets instead. It was made for 800x480 so the octagons looks bad too... ;)

Please keep the max resolution in mind: 2560x1600 (I'm one of those users, altho I'm at 5120x1600 here).

We now (or will shortly) have a working wallpaper package in dev (ugr-wallpapers), please test it out.

For new wallpapers, please file a bug in this project, with the tag new-wallpaper and the priority wishlist. Also, they will not be added yet, as the current version of the package needs to be tested. After that is good, we can mess it up again ;)
The process for adding wallpapers to the package and how ugr-wallpapers works needs to be documented on the wiki so we don't make the world end when adding wallpapers.

@Daniel I like those a lot. I have made the bug for you at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ugr-wallpapers/+bug/783861

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

The wallpaper package in dev (ugr-wallpapers) is now working. It had an issue with an empty wallpaper folder when built on launchpad, but I have fixed that. If all is good, I will move it to main soon.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

The wallpapers are now working and have been included in main for some time. Marking as fix released.

For new wallpapers and such, DO NOT put them here, as they will not be considered. File a bug on ugr-wallpapers, and attach your work.

Julien Olivier (julo) wrote :

Hi,

I think most people want to use UGR because they want to run stock GNOME 3 on Ubuntu, so why not just let them have GNOME 3's default wallpaper, with no branding whatsoever? Most users don't really gain anything from having UGR written on their wallpaper...

Julien Olivier (julo) wrote :

By the way, the same could be said for the boot and GDM screens. Why not simply use GNOME's default? It's already very nice and elegant.

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

I personally think all decisions regarding default appearance, default apps, etc. need to be left up to JC and Chris. And given the amount of effort Daniel Sandman has put forward he could potentially cast the "tie-breaking" vote should JC and Chris disagree on anything artwork related.

That's not to say opinions aren't welcome, but many decisions will have to be made with the introduction of gnome3 and GTK+ 3 in Oneiric and, in order for those decisions to be made in a timely manner, there will need to be timely responses ;^)

I'd largely consider the implementation of UGR into the Natty base to be a proving ground for what's to come implementing UGR into the Oneiric base. I certainly appreciate the "sane" dev schedule, judging from Oneiric Alpha1 iso-testing much patience is going to be needed.

JC Hulce (soaringsky) wrote :

@Julien GNOME's wallpapers are included. The Ubuntu wallpapers are also included if you do not manually remove them. We use the default GDM 3 theme. GNOME does not have a plymouth boot theme: Ubuntu does, and we have replaced it with ours. The reason we do this is branding - we want some name recognition.

@Erick Yep. We are moving to integrate with Ubuntu more closely in Oneiric, and provide some GNOME 3 parts that are missing/ incomplete (Cantarell, shell extensions, etc). UGR will probably be in the Universe repo.

Julien Olivier (julo) wrote :

@JC Hulce

I have no problem with the inclusion of UGR wallpapers. But please don't change GNOME's default wallpaper. As for the plymouth boot theme, you're right that GNOME doesn't have one. That's the only place, IMO, where it is logical to use branding, to show which distribution is starting...

By the way, I was just writing this, not because I think that UGR is doing too much branding, but just so that you know that I, at least, like it the way it currently is. Please don't decide to change the GDM theme, the default wallpaper and the default GTK/icon theme as this could possibly piss off people who love upstream GNOME (like Ubuntu does with its very unpopular brown/orange/aubergine themes).

Erick Brunzell (lbsolost) wrote :

RE: Display manager and it's themes. Since Oneiric is changing from gdm to LightDM I think we'll have to take a "wait and see" position. From what I've read ldm is much easier to "theme" but I've yet to play with it at all.

I always preferred a fairly generic gdm theme (after gnome broke gdm easy theming) like Karmic's black background. Otherwise the "flow" from splash to desktop can appear rather unfinished, eg; UGR splash, gnome's blue drapes @ gdm, then UGR wallpaper on the desktop.

The default ugr wallpaper is supposed to be the same stripes, but with
a small ugr logo in the bottom corner, which i have yet to upload.
currently, I have no internet, since I just moved. hopefully it will
be connected today. i'll upload the ugr stripes wallpaper and the
ubiquity stuff i've been working on. if anybody knows other languages,
please help translate my slideshow work. i just replaced ugr for
ubuntu where possible for everything other than the default english
one. also, i'll need help with packaging.
