Bug Description

I am reposting the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1108846 with a new description because I gave wrong info about the building host.

I have to build host that are:

- Ubuntu QUANTAL Desktop i386 with uck 2.4.7 from stable PPA.

3.5.0-22-generic i686

Description: Ubuntu 12.10
Release: 12.10
Codename: quantal

- Ubuntu Oneiric Desktop i386 and uck 2.4.6 from official ubuntu repository.

3.0.0-29-generic i686

Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Codename: oneiric

So I can run both system with UCK to repack a Lucid 10.04.4 i386 desktop CD.

I am basically running uck-gui with no special customization, no hybrid, nothing special ; resulting ISOLINUX menus work as expected when booting on both ISO.

(I have attached the Quantal host build log)

The difference I noticed is when making a usb startup disk by running usb creator from the live ISO image resulting from the Quantal build, the menu is totally broken : I got a blue background , english language only and missing menus on the bottom while it is not the case with the Oneiric's build resulting usb stick which works exactly as the ISOLINUX menu (which is expected).

So I investigated and noticed that the cpio'd file "isolinux/bootlogo" was not of the same size on the two ISO, and more precisely the contained file "init".

From here I checked how 'init' is generated and I found that gfxboot-theme-ubuntu Makefile use the 'gfxboot-compile' utility (and a couple of other binaries) . SO I suspect something has changed in gfxboot-compile from Oneiric to Quantal that makes the resulting file somehow incompatible with SYSLINUX (usb creator installs syslinux on the USB stick then almost simply copy the ISOLINUX folder content to SYSLINUX folder on the stick).

Another great info is when I rebuild another project I have based on Precise ISO from the QUANTAL build host, I don't have any problem with the SYSLINUX menu. ( this one is based on official gfboot-theme-menu 0.13.3).

May it be a Lucid SYSLINUX issue, which might be not compatible with files generated by Quantal's gfxboot-dev binaries !?

Help would be appreciated !

Thanks !
