Bug Description

Ubuntu one offers storage of contacts, which is a neat feature, but googlemail and/or android users have their contacts in the "google cloud". It would be nice to have some kind of sync feature somewhere that is able to sync the contacts regulary or at least as a direct user action.

Evolution already supports Google contacts, so, until we have an Android-specific solution, you can copy all the contacts from Google in Evolution to the U1 addressbook, and that would get synchronized to the U1 server

a cloud to cloud sync would be immensely preferred over a cloud to desktop to cloud pontential mess.

I believe Google has a contacts API, several applications sync with Google Contacts today.

Since Google requires users to maintain contacts with them for many services (android users, voice, gmail, buzz, reader) adding a cloud to cloud sync with U1 would allow users to have updated contacts for google services and still provide access to the desktop applications via desktopcouch.

This is a feature that I would really like to see implelmented.

I'd like to chime in and suggest this feature as well. A Cloud-to-cloud automatic sync would be amazing. Now I have to manually
"copy all contacts to" my U1 from Google whenever I make a change. AND if I delete a contact in Google I have to delete it manually in U1.

OT: U1 needs a lot of work, but I think it has huge potential. I'm glad there's something that will (at least eventually) provide a viable replacement to Google's evil, info-sucking services.

Add me to the list of supporters for this. I use my Android-powered phone heavily, and Evolution's Google Contact sync doesn't seem to work with Google Apps for domains (if someone has this working, shoot me an email). This would be a great feature and would allow me to use U1 much more heavily.

Maybe it can help:

I will try some hack to use this to syncronize from Desktop CouchDB.

Using the google connector from Funambol would let you sync your contacts. I'm not sure as to what level of integration we're looking for here.

the biggest problem IMHO is about contact pictures which are the only infos not already synced

I noticed that the UbuntuOne control panel in Natty specifically mentions going to the UbuntuOne website to manage contacts, "including Gmail and Facebook". Does this mean there's progress on this, or are they obliquely referring to the Google/Facebook cloud to Evolution to UbuntuOne cloud method? If so, that's a shame.

@Dario Panico: Surely contact picture sync could easily come from Facebook?

this would be the best update to Ubuntu One in a long time. Flawless contact sync with googlemail should just work.
