DBUS error on Ubuntu One Headless, possibly due to NetworkManager dependency

I am running Ubuntu One headless (following the excellent instructions on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/Headless) so I can run my Ubuntu Accomplishments service. Unfortunately nothing is syncing.

I followed the instructions but when I try to start Ubuntu One (u1sdtool -s) I first get bitten by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-client/+bug/935756 - checking 'ps ax | grep sync' I do see processes running:

If I check in the log files I see the following in syncdaemon-exceptions.log:

It seems as though the DBUS service might not be running, thus causing no syncing.
