Bug Description

My problem of the evening makes me propose this improvement. I don't know if it would be useful for a lot of people, but it would be at least for me :

I have a folder with thousands of photos. Way too many to use Ubuntu One to save/sync them. However, when I'm working on those photos, it creates an .xmp file for each one, containing all the operations I do on them (tagging, editing). It would be great for me if I could save those XMP in Ubuntu One. This way, I can edit a photo on my desktop, then keep working on it on my laptop (I keep all my photos on both). It's a manual and annoying tasks to sync the .xmp files currently: I have written a Rsync script to copy all the XMPs in Ubuntu One, then I have to sync them in the right folder on both computers...

What would be great for me : an option when I decide to add a folder to Ubuntu One, with the files to include. By default : all of them. But I could then change it into *.xmp for instance.

Hey, thanks for the suggestion, a solution to your problem would be just making a sub folder with the files you want to sync. Ill mark it as wishlist for now but patches are always welcome. If you want to have a look at it yourself we can give you help just ask on #ubuntuone on freenode.

Thanks
Shane

Hi Shane

Thanks for the fast answer

In my case, your solution is not possible. Those xmp files are called "sidecar files", as they are created by the photo software right next to the Raw photo files. Same name, just with the .xmp extension.

I wish I could write the patch, but except giving ideas here, I'm not good enough technically speaking to do it by myself unfortunately.

Hey baloo,

Wouldn't it work to ignore the picture files and let everything else synchronize?

Hi Leo

Indeed, that would work ! I will still leave this report open as :

-if I change to another brand of camera, I would have to edit the filter to add a new exclusion. If I could instead define that I want to include, I wouldn't have to think about anything new to exclude

-I have to edit hidden files for that. I know how to do it of course, but if there is a way to add this functionnality to the Ubuntu One options, everybody could use it. There are still many people not super confident in editing text files. Especially if it implies to use regular expressions ;)

Thanks for your link, at least now I can avoid the rsync step ! :)

baloo,

Yes, I agree. This is a feature request for just the inverse of what we we have now. And you might want to mark yourself as being affected by bug #625194, that's about the graphical interface for this feature.

Thanks for your report.

pura vida,
Leo.
