Bug Description

Upon reboot I logged in and Even though ubuntu one had already finished syncing my research paper to the cloud it suddenly announced about three times that it was uploading and downloading (and probably sideloading and betweenloading) my research paper. When it finished, my research paper was replaced with a ZERO byte file. This is a slight inconvenience to myself, so I have disabled ubuntu one after confirming that the website agreed with my computer on the fact that the file was filled with nothing. Perhaps in a future implementation we could have some decent version control like Dropbox and I could roll back to the point in time where I had a research paper that I won't have to rewrite for tuesday.

I didn't mean to include bindwood.. I went to launchpad.net/ubuntuone and reported a bug and thought that I obviously meant Bindwood.

Thankfully even though I had done 150MB of updates and surfed the web and installed a new program in the intervening time, which was quite stupid of me, I was able to recover the contents of the file with Foremost, but it was all God, not me. In a 33GB partition that's already mostly full, the research paper's contents, being no longer associated with the document, should well have been overwritten.

Still, we need versioning.. its been mentioned that this is planned. Now is as good as any a time to implement.

Josh,
Sorry to hear Ubuntu One is not working as expected. Thank you for taking the time to file this bug. What program where you using to write your research paper? What version of Ubuntu One are you using? You can access that information with this command:

apt-cache policy ubuntuone-client

thank you,

At the time, I was using whatever the latest versions in the natty beta were, as I was keeping up to date at all times, could probably look at SVN history to know the exact version.

Sincerely,
Josh

Josh,
Thank you for responding with the additional information. Definitely this should not be happening. It would be a great help if you could supply the client logs so we can start analyzing the problem better. We would greatly appreciate if you could zip your $HOME/.cache/ubuntuone/log/ folder and attach the zip here. You can zip the folder by right-clicking on it and selecting compress. Attach the logs to this bug report using the 'Add Attachment or Patch' button at the bottom of the page.

Also what was the name of the file that was overwritten.

After you attach the logs you can change the 'Status' of your bug back to 'New'. The status of a bug report can be modified by clicking on the current status in the yellow line, which will reveal a sub menu. You can then set a new status in the drop down box.

thank you,
duanedesign
