Bug Description

Impact
======
webkit2gtk 2.14.2 is a new bugfix release in the stable 2.14 series

https://webkitgtk.org/2016/11/03/webkitgtk2.14.2-released.html

Same justification as bug 1632535 ...

https://webkitgtk.org/security/WSA-2016-0006.html was just posted. New security fixes are not backported to previous stable releases, so I believe we will be updating Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with the 2.14 series like we did with the 2.12 series recently.

Because of the non-trivial regression potential, it's good to get some real-world testing first. Plus it fixes some bugs affecting 16.10.

Test Case
=========
- Run epiphany-browser, evolution and yelp since those apps currently use webkitgtk's unstable DOM API
- Run the ubiquity slideshow. Instructions for doing this without needing to run the installer are at

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webkit2gtk/+bug/1618956/comments/4

Those 4 apps are the most likely to have problems with the update. It would probably be good to test a few other apps from its rdepends too:

$ reverse-depends src:webkit2gtk

I have done this testing from my PPA. Please don't permanently add this PPA to your system as I use it for a variety of packaging experiments.

Regression Potential
====================
Low to Moderate. The diff is too large to be able to review very easily.
A few months ago, a stable webkit2gtk update (2.12.4, fixed in 2.12.5) broke the ubiquity slideshow ( bug 1618956 ). This risk is mitigated because we are specifically testing for that now.

@Jeremy -- the overall diff looks tollerable. I think we need to have something clearer in the test plan to cover general use cases other than the things which got fixed. With that I think we are good.

Andy Whitcroft (apw) wrote : Please test proposed package

Hello Jeremy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted webkit2gtk into yakkety-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/webkit2gtk/2.14.2-0ubuntu1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

I confirm that epiphany-browser, evolution and yelp still work with webkit2gtk 2.14.2-0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu GNOME 16.10.

I also confirm that the installer slideshow still works.

Since Andy mentioned "I think we need to have something clearer in the test plan to cover general use cases other than the things which got fixed.", should some of these be checked as well before accepting this into yakkety-updates?

Thanks.

I tested these other apps too:

- devhelp
- The GNOME Books app (part of gnome-documents) to open an epub using libgepub
- gnome-initial-setup
- gnome-maps
- gnome-sushi (a previewer for Nautilus included in Ubuntu GNOME, activated by the space bar)
- gufw (uses webkit for the embedded help on the home screen)
- ubuntu-mate-welcome (I assume it uses webkit for the animations)
