Thanks Lal! I found some more info on what you said at http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/vpnc and tried it out.
It works, but unfortunately this method does not seem to allow me to access certain functions on the system I need to connect to. Probably due to DNS issues. I found some info on that on the Gentoo wiki and will continue to experiment.
In the meantime the applet controls are still not working. It seems for me they only work the first time after deleting .gconf, and after vpnc is used once and a fresh config file is written, it stops working again. Hopefully there will be a fix for this soon.
