You'll see an "URB submitted while active" error in my dmesg when running the older driver. These messages were frequent on previous Ubuntu releases. I think the current patches were to "fix" this, but seem to have prompted the regression.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v4.6 kernel[0].

There is a proposed (untested) fix here[1] and paroj has asked reporters to confirm whether they are using wired or wireless and 360 or other.

The proposed fix doesn't do anything for me. I've appended details to the upstream github tracker.

To clarify the original bug report, I am using a _wired_ Xbox 360 controller.

I won't be able to test it out until next weekend but I thought I'd mention its existence here so the ubuntu guys can add it (since they backported the the regression in #1564901)

The fix from paroj's repo works for me. Can we get this backported? Although the importance of this bug is marked as "medium", it is a bug which can damage hardware and surrounding equipment as unexpectedly-vibrating joypads have a tendency to fall off surfaces.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-xenial' to 'verification-done-xenial'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

Learned I had this problem a half hour ago when trying to show my friend Bioshock Infinite. Found this bug report. Tested the kernel in -proposed and it now works perfectly. I appreciate your work. Otsukare-sama deshita.
