In other words, the version of googleapi in Xenial isn't the most compatible with the version of oauth2client in Xenial, and the former depends on the latter.

This is fairly serious, as python-googleapi in Xenial is unusable as a result.
Since updating Xenial to an new upstream version is unlikely to be approved post-release, please see this upstream Git commit for the one-line fix to this problem:
