I did try to install the upstream kernel linux-image-4.11.0-041100rc8-generic_4.11.0-041100rc8.201704232131_amd64.deb and linux-headers-4.11.0-041100rc8-generic_4.11.0-041100rc8.201704232131_amd64.deb but unfortunately the system barely boots and the networking is messed up after the change. I can't tell if the cifs problem is any better.
