Bug Description

A fresh install of 12.04.3 fails to upgrade to 14.04.

To reproduce:
1) Install 12.04.3 (I am using the amd64 version in a virtualbox VM)
2) Install all available software updates
3) Run update-manager -d to force the upgrade to the development release of Ubuntu

Expected results:
The upgrade runs and completes

Actual results:
update-manager reports "Could not calculate the upgrade. An unresolvable probolem occured while calculating the uprade". There are no details in the error dialog about what went wrong.

From /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log it looks like a packaging problem results in unity being selected for removal, which is not valid because unity is in the blacklist of packages that should not be removed on upgrade.

Thanks for your report. Could you please attach the content of the directory /var/log/dist-upgrade as separate attachments. I'm especially interested in apt-clone_system_state.tar.gz

Thanks.

@Jean-Baptiste: the logs are already attached, and I've just attached apt-clone_system_state.tar.gz Apport is supposed to upload that file automatically, but it doesn't due to a permissions error (bug 1274704)

The upgrader refuses to upgrade because it cannot calculate an upgrade path for xorg-lts packages.

I reported a similar bug as #1388511. Is it the same bug?

There's a workaround suggested at

http://askubuntu.com/questions/496401/how-to-upgrade-from-xserver-xorg-lts-saucy-to-xserver-xorg-lts-trusty

This involves removing the entire GUI, upgrading the distro, and reinstalling the entire GUI. That seems a bit much.
