Bug Description

I tried to boot from the LiveCD in UEFI mode as I wished to install my UEFI capable workstation in UEFI + GPT mode. If I boot in legacy mode, it boots up without a problem but of course, does not allow me to install in UEFI mode. Seems to perhaps indicate that the disk controller is having a problem. It's a Dell PERC H310. I get the following error over and over:
udevd[114]: timeout: killing `/sbin/modprobe -bv pci:v00001000d00000073sv00001028sd00001F78bc01sc04i00' [182]

Then finally:
udevadm settle - timeout of 120 seconds reached, the event queue contains:
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.0/0000:06:00.0 (1588)
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.0/0000:06:00.0/host6 (1588)
  /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:03.0/0000:06:00.0/host6/scsi_host/host6 (1588)

WORKAROUND: It boots up in legacy BIOS mode fine.

Hi Douglas,

It would be very helpful if you can run the apport-collect command requested in comment #4. That will give us some additional details about your hardware.

Thanks in advance.

Obviously this data is for the machine booted in legacy BIOS mode, not UEFI mode.

Sorry I didn't include the apport-collection data before, I hadn't realised it was still used when reporting a bug on the install CD.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Ok, I tried, but I am struggling. I understand how to install a mainline kernel and boot from it on my system, but that doesn't tell us anything as it'd still be in legacy BIOS mode. How do I make a mainline livecd to boot?

I tried this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1951153, but uck crashes for an unspecified reason at the customization stage which is how I'd add the mainline kernel.

I also tried customizing the ISO manually, but I don't think I did it right as the boot procedure seems more complicated from a livecd.

I'm happy to do the test, but I just need instructions on how to do it.

This seemed to be a good idea: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/qa-o-kernel-mainline-testing

If I boot the usb stick I modified by hand it has the mainline kernel installed, it has /boot/grub/grub.cfg with entries rerferring to the mainline kernel. Initial loading results in repeated killing of modprobe, then eventually into a purple graphical shell with ubuntu logo and five white / orange dots underneath. Let it run for a couple of minutes but nothing happens.

No activity on my USB stick LED, either so it looks to have hanged.

The only current workaround for this bug is to avoid UEFI altogether and
install and boot both Windows and Ubuntu in legacy mode, if dual booting
those OSes.

Linuxexperte (andrea-koeth) wrote : Re: LiveCD/USB will not boot in UEFI mode

hi together,

I can confirm the same thing here on my new bought Notebook.

Machine: Toshiba Satellite C850 1LQ

I have wiped Windows off the HDD and found, that LinuxMint 15 does not support Installation with UEFI-boot enabled, so the
only chance for me was, to disable it by pressing F2 at boot.

This brings you into the BIOS and there go to "advanced" and there go to Systemconfiguration and there go to the boot-options.
There select CSM rather than UEFI. Then presss F10 to save these changes and then reboot your machine.

Only thi way let's you installl LinuxMint 15 Olivia.

So we see, that UEFI currently is a messup and the death of many Notebooks. The thing is, that UEFI bricks many Samsung-machines letting them with an unusable machine an no OS booting anymore, if UEFI is enabled. Just read here:

http://www.h-online.com/open/news/item/Booting-Linux-using-UEFI-can-brick-Samsung-laptops-1793958.html

or even the warning here:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2027819/not-just-linux-windows-can-brick-samsung-laptops-too.html

So do not use UEFI as long as this problem persists.

Greetings
Linuxhelfer

Steps:
1. Download and install BIOS update A10 from Dell (in Win 7 - I dual boot)

3. Reboot the computer holding down F12
4. When the boot menu appears, choose to boot from USB with UEFI mode
5. Boot into Ubuntu (I'm 'trying without installing')

Seems OK now, can anyone verify?
