This issue still persists. I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since Alpha 1 and been doing an update/full-upgrade every other day. Yesterday it wanted to uninstall over 200+ packages, I waited until today and it still wanted to do it so I finally let it. When I got back into the GUI, and went to Additional drivers, the ATI driver was no longer activated, it was before. When I went to activate ATI Post-Release-Updates (again, I have done this in the past) it errors out against jockey.

FYI I can install the regular ATI Proprietary driver without fail. I was able to activate the non post-release-updates version and after reboot it was active. I then tried again to select the post-release-updates version and this time no crash; it downloaded a few things and then that was it. No installation, no reboot message, etc. just sat there. I rebooted and it still wasn't active. I then was able to activate the non post-release-update version again.

Getting the same problem. I'm on an AMD 64bit release of 12.04 Beta . Tried removing the proprietary driver (ATI/AMD FGLRX) and the problem persisted. But that was a few days back, and a lot of updates ago. I'm reactivating the driver (the post release driver never worked for me, not even in 11.10) and checking on the crash issue.

Hello Ehcor8, i had the same problem (crash with videos) with my laptop (AMD Radeon HD 6310) and i managed to fix it.
You might intall the proprietary display driver manually, now it work well for me (fluid 1080p videos).
You can find a good tutorial at : http://www.upubuntu.com/2012/03/how-to-install-ati-amd-catalyst-122.html
But there are some mistakes in it!

You should write --purge instead of -purge in the terminal.
( sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx not
 sudo apt-get remove -purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx)

Then you should enter "sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-12-2-x86.x86_64.run" instead of "sh ./amd-driver-installer-12-2-x86.x86_64.run".

If like me you had an error with the installation (the installer says that old drivers are still present) just enter
"sudo sh ./amd-driver-installer-12-2-x86.x86_64.run --force", it worked for me!

If you have any question or if you need a translation in french, do not hesitate!

Crashing while doing such an important operation as installing a driver breaks the entire system, for example in my case once crashed trying to install the post-release updates I can't switch monitor, no more audio from HDMI and mouse freezes on the bottom right corner of the screen. In addition system in this state can't be fixed by just removing the driver!
