Bug Description

SRU Justification:

Impact:
Backlight hotkeys are registered and OSD shows backlight level going up and down but there is no effect on actual backlight level.

Fix:
Apply a system specific quirk to the kernel for this model.

Testing:
TBD

Following the debugging instructions here: <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight>, I have added the kernel boot parameter "acpi_backlight=vendor" and this makes the backlight work as expected.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the release candidate kernel versus the daily build. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

If you are comfortable with opening a bug upstream, It would be great if you can report back the upstream bug number in this bug report. That will allow us to link this bug to the upstream report.

I was not able to open an upstream bug at bugzilla.kernel.org because
it is still offline.

It turns out that this laptop requires the 'samsung-laptop' platform
driver in order for backlight control to work. The driver contains a
whitelist of the DMI strings of models known to require this driver.
This laptop identifies itself thusly:

$ sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name
 N150P

The attached patch adds this model to the whitelist which causes the
driver to load and work as expected. The boot parameter
"acpi_backlight=vendor" seems to have the same ultimate affect as this
patch but needs to be manually set.

I have forwarded the patch upstream:
https://lkml.org/lkml/2011/12/22/364
and
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.platform.x86.devel/2808
